{"id":1359,"date":"2017-01-26T10:16:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mcfee4kids.org\/word\/?page_id=1359"},"modified":"2017-01-26T10:16:12","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T15:16:12","slug":"2016-2017-mcfee-grants","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mcfee4kids.org\/word\/?page_id=1359","title":{"rendered":"2016-2017 MCFEE GRANTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>2016-2017 MCFEE Teacher Grants In Classrooms Across the District!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>$ 65,000 has been designated for innovative teacher grants to enrich and enhance the education of Manheim Central students this year.\u00a0 MCFEE is grateful to have the community support to make the funding for these available.\u00a0 Generous Individual and Business donations and participation in the annual Family Breakfast and MCFEE\u2019s Kids Count Benefit Auction and Dinner make these possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>District Wide Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Junior Achievement:<br \/>\n<\/strong>$13,497 \u00a0EITC FUNDING and MCFEE funds<br \/>\nJunior Achievement- a volunteer-delivered k-12 program fostering financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work-readiness skills- brings many programs to the Manheim Central District.\u00a0 Over 1,137 students were impacted in 2014-15. Each JA program runs at a budgeted cost of $725.\u00a0 The grant from MCFEE will cover over 13 classrooms across the district.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>District Art Show<\/strong><br \/>\n$ 500<br \/>\nThis grant will help to continue a K to 12 district wide art exhibition that showcases the creativity of our students. It will be held at the Farm Show Exhibition Center and celebrate the visual arts.\u00a0 Day 1 will be an opening reception and exhibition.\u00a0 Day 2 will be elementary student gallery visits led by National Art Honor Society docents. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Elementary Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beginning Research with PebbleGo for all elementary schools<\/strong><br \/>\n$2,985<br \/>\nOne year of access for a database of articles, videos and games that uses scaffolding strategies to strengthen emergent readers\u2019 literacy and research skills.\u00a0 PebbleGo includes leveled and fully narrated text, animated highlighting, glossary words, visual searching, educational videos and games and encompassing activities which teach students how to cite articles, create reports and share what they\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 The database is available over the Internet via computer or with an iPad app.\u00a0 It supports students who are working at different academic levels. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Florian- author visit\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br \/>\n$3,300<br \/>\nMr.\u00a0 Florian is a poet and will share his writings and love of poetry with all of the elementary students of Manheim Central in March, 2017. His books, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Insectlopedia, Dinothesaurus, and The Beast Feast<\/span> promote students&#8217; motivation to read non fiction text and connect science and literacy. \u00a0 The cost is for presentations, as well as his travel\u00a0and hotel.\u00a0<strong>NEW AUTHOR, AUTHOR VISITS PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>16th Annual Wetland and Watershed Day<br \/>\n<\/strong>$1700 EITC FUNDING<br \/>\nAll fourth grade students in the district will be given the opportunity to learn about wetlands and watershed through hands on activities on the Manheim Farm Show grounds and along Chiques Creek.\u00a0 Presenters for the day will include the MCHS Agriculture Science students, members of the high school Envirothon team and environmental industry representatives from PA DEP, Lancaster Conservation District, Lancaster Watershed Alliance, PA Boat and Fish Commission, and the PA Game Commission.\u00a0 This grant provides this applied field experience\u2019s materials, honorariums and student transportation.\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED, EITC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Doe Run Nature Club\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br \/>\n$536<br \/>\nThe purpose of the Nature Club is to enhance and enrich the outdoor and environmental knowledge of Doe run 4<sup>th<\/sup> graders in an after school club format.\u00a0\u00a0 They meet 1 to 2 times a month and students participate in a variety of activities centered on science, environmental and nature themes.\u00a0\u00a0 Some include field trips to identify wildlife and plants that inhabit different types of ecosystems with PA, owl pellet dissection, stream studies, and programs from local experts form the PA Game Commission Lancaster County Conservation District and Lancaster County Parks.\u00a0\u00a0 Some activities are centered on material covered in the Lancaster County Junior Envirothon and the Nature Club sends student to compete in May. \u00a0\u00a0<strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arithmetickles<br \/>\n<\/strong>$2200<br \/>\nTwo assemblies for the elementary students will be provided- an interactive math game show that involves the students in the learning process. \u00a0These will be followed by the Arithmetickles Math Night in which all students and their families are invited back in the evening to work together to solve math puzzles and math-related games. \u00a0\u00a0<strong>NEW GRANT<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Underwater Expedition \u00a0Video Conference\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br \/>\n$ 750<br \/>\nThe videoconference for all second grade students at H.C. Burgard is a live experience in which students learn more about animal habitats in the ocean through a live video presentation .\u00a0 This program will allow student to have the advantage of an expert in this area of the science curriculum.\u00a0 Students will interact with the presenter.\u00a0 This enhances the science standards for this unit.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0All Pro Dad\u2019s Program at Stiegel<\/strong><br \/>\n$750<br \/>\nStiegel Elementary will sponsor All Pro Dad\u2019s breakfast events which will include a 45 minute program of fatherhood and family topics.\u00a0 MCFEE Fund will be utilized to cover some programming and materials cost.\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab<br \/>\n<\/strong>$3000\u00a0\u00a0 EITC FUNDING<br \/>\nA 32 ft. mobile science agriculture lab equipped with all supplies and a certified teacher will be parked at the Manheim Farm Show Area for all third grade students from the district in May, 2017.\u00a0\u00a0 They will perform hands on science experiments, each teaching a lesson in agriculture. Children work cooperatively to solve a problem as they form a hypothesis, collect data, and draw conclusions.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED, EITC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Middle School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Discussion with MH Herlong, Author of the Great Wide Sea<br \/>\n<\/strong>$1600<br \/>\nThe seventh grade reads MH Herlong&#8217;s novel, the Great Wide Sea, each year. \u00a0 The author is coming from New Orleans to have a rigorous, in depth discussion of the novel&#8217;s components with all of the students. \u00a0This grant will bring her from New Orleans LA, pay travel, lodging food and speaking fee. \u00a0 <strong>\u00a0NEW GRANT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Makerspace at the MS<br \/>\n<\/strong>$4300<br \/>\nThe makerspace in the MS Media Center will provide students from the Middle School a place to gather to create, invent and learn. \u00a0 A green screen, robotics and kits to integratge formal and\/or unstructured STEM\/STEAM learning. \u00a0 This grant provides the supplies and equipment to develop this space. \u00a0<strong> NEW GRANT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Middle School and High School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Manheim Momentum Percussion Ensemble<\/strong><br \/>\n$5290<br \/>\nThe grant this year continues and expands \u201cManheim Momentum\u201d, an afterschool percussion ensemble that began through a MCFEE grant.\u00a0\u00a0 The ensemble is open to any student in grades 7 to 12 interested in learning or strengthening their total percussion skills, understanding and technique.\u00a0 It has a heavy emphasis on peer to peer mentoring from older to younger students that strengthens individual and group musicianship, leadership, scholarship and healthy relationships.\u00a0 Funding this year provided an additional marimba and vibraphone with accessories. \u00a0 \u00a0<strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED, EITC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>High School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Manheim Central International Culture Day and a Night Around the World \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>$2728.22<br \/>\nStudent groups from the high school select a country to represent and then follow strict guidelines overseen by a faculty sponsor to represent their country at the annual International Culture Day.\u00a0\u00a0 This is being expanded to an evening with elementary students invited to attend with their families.\u00a0 Each country will be given a budget of $175 to spend on food and supplies for their country.\u00a0 12 to 14 groups of students volunteer to research and present their countries.\u00a0 <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Driven to Distraction<\/strong><br \/>\n$2938 (2 semesters for all of 10<sup>th<\/sup> grade) $1,469 each<br \/>\nThis program, provided by the Byrnes Health Education Center, provides knowledge of the legal, physical and psychological consequences associated with impaired and distracted driving and all get a chance to participate in a driving simulator experience. <strong>PREVIOUSLY FUNDED\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cyber Surgeons Simulation with National Institute of Health<\/strong><br \/>\n$800<br \/>\nThis videoconference is a simulation- to complete the mission, students become part of the fictional Cyber Surgeons remote trauma unit on a mercy ship. This simulated ship has high tech hospital and medical research capabilities, state of the art high end communication systems and dedicated satellites to relay information.\u00a0 Students will diagnose various maladies and recommend treatments, all while interacting with a \u201cchief medical officer\u201d from the Challenger Learning Center.
